Bhopal gas tragedy: Justice is Just-Ice only

IT WAS expected like other high profile cases that the Honorable Court will pass its verdict on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy with meager punishment and fine of some thousand/lakh rupees.

Later, all culprits went scot-free with bail and they can also appeal in the high court. It has proved once again that India has become a centre of caricature of justice. Shame! After 26 years of the tragedy, we failed to deliver justice to our people, who are still battling with diseases and deformity by toxic gas leaked from a United States based multinational Union Carbide Corporation.

This verdict has raised questions on the delivery of justice and the judicial mechanism. It is like giving reward to culprits rather than punishment. The court verdict looks like that gas has capacity to not only kill human beings, but also the judicial system, governance system and human spirit. Our government talks about nuclear liability bill in the world, but this verdict shows we don’t need any liability bill in India. India is a place where justice for rich and mighty is just-ice.

The court should have respected people’s sentiments. The people of Bhopal have undergone untold sufferings. They must have the satisfaction of seeing justice meted out to the culprits and compensation given to sufferers in proper measure for all the pains they have undergone. This is high time to bring reforms in to our
Indian Penal Codes (IPC), as criminal are escaping easily by hook and crook. Now, the only solution is left that public and media should come forward and oppose this verdict. Otherwise culprits will never get the right punishment.

Internationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur denounced the judgement, terming it “completely irrelevant”.

Those on whose shoulders lies the responsibility of this avoidable, irresponsible, completely mismanaged accident have long since made their deals with the government of India and gone. It was one of the greatest and most brutal sellouts by the government of India and its courts of the people of India,” Kapur posted on his blog.
