Mediapersons face the brunt of violence

A cameraman of a TV channel alleged that he was beaten up and his equipment destroyed in the clash between two groups of advocates during the unveiling of Ambedkar's statue at the Madras High Court on Sunday.
In his complaint, Live India cameraman R V Bharani Babu (29) told the Esplanade police that while shooting the fracas on the premises, when he was attacked by a group of persons, who punched him in the chest, snatched his camera worth Rs 1.11 lakh and smashed it into pieces.
Babu was taken to Kothavalchavadi police station. Mediapersons were not allowed access to the cameraman and after two hours, the police took him to the Government General Hospital for treatment. Later, he was brought to the Esplanade police station, where Inspector Muthuraja, registered an FIR.

Police sources said NDTV Hindu cameraman Devaraj was also assaulted and his equipment damaged, while Jaya TV cameramen, Ponniah Thevan and Ramesh, were beaten up. The police have arrested two activists of Ambedkar Viduthalai Munnani — Durairaj and Ezhilarasu.

Chennai Press Club, Madras Union of Journalists and Chennai Union of Journalists have demanded the arrest of all those involved in the incident.
